Italy

Italy is a country with no historical recollection of Islamic religion. Deeply Catholic, the Islamic religious presence is a direct consequence of the recent immigration waves from various parts of the world. Italy's Muslim population is relatively small -1m approximately (out of the 57m in total), but is certainly noticeable especially in certain parts of Italy and growing in numbers. Islam constitutes the second most popular religion.
In Italy incidents involving the hijab have occured and are brought and stir up discussions around the assimillation of immigrants, and human rights. (Fear of) Islamic fundamentalism  has also played a role in forming public perceptions.
